For at least a decade, the sea of vacant lots, nights that crackle with gunfire, and abandoned buildings burning without attention have all been the constant companions of those few people still left in Detroit. Nevertheless, in a masterful display of propaganda damage control Detroit’s true condition has remained a secret outside of the Motor City and its surrounding area.
That secret is now out.
A $ 1.7 million extensive forensic audit of Detroit’s finances done by Ernst & Young has found its way to sunlight. It describes a city that is NOT rebounding and NOT “getting on its feet” in spite of what Chrysler’s TV ads say. It says Detroit is running out of money – very quickly. Some of the debts the city has run up are 18 months old and still can’t be paid. At the end of this calendar year Detroit will not have the money to pay its employees, and come April 2012 it will be flat broke. Today the city owes $155 million but by next spring that could double.
Rick Snyder the “mean ole” Republican Governor, won’t sign off on Mayor Dave Bing’s recovery plan just because it doesn’t add up. Now Detroit can’t sell fundraising bonds to pay for water projects or other construction projects.( but how about paying the day to day bills?)
Protecting private “contracts”
Basketball Hall of Famer Mayor Dave Bing is a man over his head in a no win situation. He did not “grow up” in politics as those before him have. He made his money in a produce or perish occupation where failure is punished by firing. Doing what was best for his employer and his businesses have always been his guiding principles. This is why the city Council’s refusal to work with Bing instead of taking care of their benefactors is so frustrating.
The Council wants Bing to layoff 500 cops and 300 fire fighters among other city employees – anything but cutting their pet projects is fine with these people.
Of course the city’s unions refuse to budge on anything – they haven’t noticed that Michigan is now run by Republicans who have no intension of incurring state debt to provide a one time fix for Detroit.
Without emergency powers the state can bestow on Bing, Detroit will die in about six months. Those powers would include clearance to renegotiate pay and benefit packages for city employees. If he gets these powers and dares to use them he will be destroyed by the liberal establishment.
Detroit is a red flashing sign of where America is headed if Obama is reelected. We can’t let that happen.

Detroit is a microcosm of what is facing so many once-producing, manufacturing cities. Between State and City union employees, police and firefighter unions , NEA or AFT teacher's unions, plus the UAW and other Teamster unions; (not to mention the historically Democratic political "tax and spend" binges of Mayors and City Councils ), these cities show little promise of economic recovery unless major concessions will be forthcoming from unions.
Many, but certainly not all, union members "get" the fact that their jobs are seriously at risk; so why aren't the union bosses negotiating in good faith for their employees across the country ?
City residents, some of whom are now jobless themselves, can no longer afford to pick up the tab for union perks, salary increases and benefits !
The same is occurring where I live. Previous council members dug a hole and now the new members cannot find a way out of it. But let's not cut funding to "special" groups, instead let's raise taxes. The members have not missed one cost of living or annual salary raise, but the employees have not had either. I hope Detroit will pull out of this but it wpn't be easy with the left pulling on the purse strings.
Watch Detroit burn baby. The Unions set the fire, they took up larceny from Bondholders and dealers and grabbed the common stock in a clawback. Now we can watch their city burn, the mobs spreading out to the suburbs (where the unions live) and the all democrat can show us what Unions and Liberals can build with enough money, a funeral pyre.
