Don’t Count Al-Qaeda Out Yet.

 Today, European police are searching for suspected terrorist hit teams planning a Mumbai-style attack on lightly protected targets in Europe. Even though no specific targets have been identified, the intelligence community believes Al-Qaeda is likely planning to strike the U.K., France or Germany. The success of the Mumbai attack has emboldened Al-Qaeda’s associated Haqqani network. U.S. Officials consider the Haqqani to be a proxy of Pakistan’s Intelligence directorate.

 Mumbai, India was attacked on November 26, 2008 by ten terrorist from Pakistan. The attack lasted for three days and killed 164 people. European security officials are reviewing the Mumbai assault as a preventative measure to capture suspected terrorists before they could strike. Intelligence officials speculate the strike team originated in Pakistan and has already entered Europe by way of Iran and Turkey.

 Discovery

 The plot was revealed by Ahmed Sidiqi, a militant detained in Kabul. When he was turned over to the U.S. Forces he provided details about the terror plot during questioning. Sidiqi, a German citizen of Afghan descent traveled to Afghanistan in 2009 to join the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, an extremist group allied with Al-Qaeda.

 Uncovering the plot

 The challenge to American intelligence agencies has been learning to work backwards with a lack of details on individuals, operations and logistical information on those planning to carry out these plots.

 Since August analysts have been diligently working to identify and locate the plotters in the hope of discovering more details of their scheme and targets.  We shares intelligence with European allies and in a statement released by Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr. “As we have repeatedly said, we know al Qaeda wants to attack Europe and the United States.”

 Drone Strikes

In an effort to disrupt the planned terrorist attack the CIA has stepped-up drone strikes against terrorist in Pakistan’s tribal regions. During the month of September it has been reported that 21 strike missions have been launched making the month the busiest ever for the Agency’s cross boarder missions. The intensified attack in the Waziristan region is an expansion of drones operations from surgical strikes to missions of disrupting terrorist organizations’ activities. This is a first ever use of Predator or Reaper aircraft in a preemptive role to dissuade on-going operations.

 The last attack is believed to have killed Sheikh Fateh al-Misri, Al-Qeada’s No. 3 commander which in the last year has become the most dangerous occupation on the planet.
