Flashes of honest reporting beg the question: Is the media bailing on Obama?

By Kevin “Coach” Collins

Of course there is no full-fledged media retreat from Barack Obama, but the number of gratuitous swipes it has taken at their president is certainly curious.  All of these reports from various media outlets have been posted in just the last few weeks. None of them will be helpful to Obama’s re-election and all of them are the kind of reports heretofore found only in “new media” sources if at all.

An editorial by the New York Times’ Arthur Brisbane called on “The Paper of Record” to determine “who is the real Obama?”  Brisbane said that the Times hasn’t done much to help develop a true picture of the real Barack Obama as it should now that he is standing for re-election.

An Indiana television station reported that through an IRS loophole millions of illegal aliens are getting tax “refunds” totaling in the BILLIONS for the support of children in Mexico and other foreign countries.

After Obama’s weak April jobs showing the Washington Post (a legendary Democrat house organ) explained why his numbers are false and the true unemployment rate should be set at 11.1% not the 8.1%. It also reminded readers that the 115,000 jobs “added” to the workforce doesn’t even keep pace with the normal number of work age Americans entering the job market. Worse still the notion of a “labor force participation rate” was injected into the discussion. Although all of these telling blows have been available to any honest reporter for at least two years why are they being written about now?

Maybe the worse breach of the media’s “omerta” of silence about anything that shows Obama in a bad light was the report from Jessica Yellin of CNN whose liberal credentials are impeccable. Covering an Obama campaign rally at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill campus, she wrote the following, “In 2008 candidate Barack Obama spoke @ UNC’s Dean Smith Center. Capacity 22,000. Today he’s at Carmichael Area, seats -9,000. Where’s the luv?”

The serious nature of this report has clouded the real message of this story. That Obama spoke to a crowd of less than half of what he had in 2008 is almost secondary to the impact of the medium Yellin used. By tweeting she was able to get her bad news report past the “gatekeepers” above her. Once she sent this tweet there was no way to smother the story even though it’s a safe bet CNN would have wanted to kill it.

Maybe Yellin did this in a careless moment, but if so other such “careless moments” of random media honesty, whether by accident or on purpose, will certainly make Obama’s re-election campaign an uphill fight.
