On August 22 Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran unveiled a domestic remotely piloted bomber called the Karrar, which is Fasi for Striker.
He proclaimed “The jet, as well as being an ambassador of death for the enemies of humanity, has a main message of peace and friendship, and the prevention of any conflict and aggression….. The main message of our defense achievements is to deter any type of confrontation.”
During his remarks he emphasized his country’s desire to develop the capability to wage pre-emptive strikes but vowed that it was only deterrence against its enemies. The Chinese would call this a Paper Tiger: something that seems as threatening as a tiger, but is really harmless.
Iran has been producing unmanned drones since the 1980s and they were often copies of other aircraft. It has been suggested that Iran’s UAV was a copy of a South African design. In a State TV interview the managing director of Iran’s Aircraft Manufacturing Industries Brig. Gen. Mohammad Alizadeh stated that the UAV was able “to conduct surveillance over or launch strikes against U.S. ships and bases in the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan.” He claimed it could carry bombs of varying sizes and ranges that could strike at ships, communications installations, airports, bases and bridges.” The Iranians were disappointed that the UAV couldn’t reach Israel.As reported on Iranian State TV the 13-foot Karrar a High Speed UAV is capable of carrying four stealth cruise missiles or one 450-pound guided bomb or two 250-pound bombs. For such a small platform it is highly unlikely considering that smallest manufactured cruise missile weighs about 1000lbs. Copies of Hellfire missiles would be a more realistic payload. With a top speed of 560mph and a range of 600 miles make it more of a nuisance for its neighbors than being a useful weapon. As for the advertised bomb loads it is plausible but it would severely reduce the speed and range of the UAV. With its short range it wouldn’t have much time over the target to mount an effective [4]attack as routinely performed by the Predator UAV. Bottom line; this drone is far less capable than a single Tomahawk missile or an AGM-86C/D ALCM.
Iran often boasts of its military ability but has never proved its capability outside of Ahmadinejad’s rhetoric. The worst any world leader can do it to recognize this Paper Tiger as a world power and this is exactly what Obama wants to do, without preconditions.
