Obama’s Green Energy Scam

By Basil Irwin, staff writer

Kicking off his interminable campaign, President Barack Obama is running around the country flapping his lips that one answer to high gasoline prices is to spend money developing renewable energy sources.

Riiiiiiiight. We’ll all drive windmill or solar powered cars. Obama would be more believable if he suddenly started wearing a cardigan sweater around the White House with a passel of “WIN” buttons pinned to its breast.

Wind and solar energy cost several times more per unit of energy than coal, oil, or natural gas. Not to mention that wind and solar don’t scale. As a university-trained and credentialed scientist, I calculated that to replace just the current U.S. electrical energy produced by burning fossil fuels would take either 600,000 80-story-high windmills or paving about half of New Mexico with solar panels and access roads.

Of course, the sun only shines bright enough for solar panels to work about 8 hours a day, and there are no batteries that can hold the 2.5 terrawatt-hours of  electricity our nation consumes for those other 16 hours every day of the year, so something else would have to be done when the sun don’t shine.

My calculations also show that those 600,000 80-story windmills would need to be spaced at about a mile apart to avoid eddy disturbances from their neighbors, and therefore they would have to occupy about 20% of the continental U.S. and of course would need to be sited in areas where it’s windy, which are not areas where most of us live. Thus, for both solar and wind, a massive new power grid would also need to be constructed to carry the power to where people actually use the energy.

And mind you, the above is just for current electricity production and says nothing about replacing fuel for heating our homes in winter or the fuel we burn for transportation, or gasp, the massive amount of new electricity that would need to be generated should we all suddenly start gliding about in  magic lectric-bamamobiles.

Likewise, ethanol and its federal subsidies are a sick joke. We burn 40% of our corn crop for ethanol and then pretend we don’t know why food prices are skyrocketing. And the really sad thing is that even Al Gore admits that there is no gain from using ethanol compared to the conventional energy inputs used to produce it.

And it’s worse than even Gore admits. Conventional analysis never mentions that the net carbon output for ethanol production and usage is actually doubled compared to simply burning an equivalent amount of petroleum. No one ever counts the ton of CO2 those little yeasties emit for every ton of ethanol they produce.

People, “green” energy is a scam. It’s not cheaper, but more expensive, than conventional energy. And it can’t exist, even in its smallest form, without massive federal subsidies paid for with new deficit financing. Like ethanol, the sole purpose of wind and solar energy is to create a new constituency that’s totally dependent on federal subsidies, thereby creating a new way to buy votes for the U.S. Social Democrat Progressive Marxist Party. The only thing green about “green” energy is the color of your tax dollars being used to buy votes with.

1776: Rhode Island became the first American colony to renounce allegiance to King George III. Considering the way Rhode Island votes it might become the first state to renounce allegiance to America.

  1. Basil Irwin does not include the foolish effort directed at harnessing wave energy! Currently Oregon is wasting money on this pie-in-the-sky scheme. Intended for the Pacific Ocean, little examination is given to this harsh environment. It is not a playground. Any maintenance required to be affected in other but summertime will be dangerous and foolhardy.

The scheme does keep government types busy in endless meetings, but there is a cost to that, which should be considered!

  2. It's a scam alright, because what Obama and Soros want is massive inflation and collapse of the dollar so that Soros shorting of the dollar will make him and all the other socialists rich and powerful.

  3. Have any idea how clueless this article is about energy and its real costs? Denmark makes more energy than it needs using a combination of wind and storage (batteries are not the only way to do it). Solar thermal with storage is way cheaper than nuclear even with nuclear's subsidies. Only a moron would do a pointless calculation of deriving all our electric load with solar electric. Or a goofy one about 600,000 windmills. And only a moron would not realize that peak electricity, the kind you need in the middle of the day, costs LOTS more than solar electric in much of the country.
The only thing you say with any merit is that natural gas has a continued big role and frankly ought to be used for transportation.
Corn ethanol in this country is a product of REPUBLICAN greed using farmer subsidies. Do a little research on who sponsored the subsidies to grow it and the subsidies to make it into ethanol. It's nuts to make it from corn. But its not nuts at all to make it from other stuff. 70% of Brazil's transportation runs on cheap domestic ethanol. And it is NOT carbon negative.

But of course, this is all part of the sinister master plan to make one world government and socialists everywhere! Pathetic you call yourself American.

    1. Lots of gobus assertions there, Jack, and not one scintilla of evidence to back up a single one of your lies.

  4. check this action out ……… S. 679: Presidential Appointment Efficiency and Streamlining Act of 2011

    The Apotheosis Of Barack Obama

Senatus Populusque Romanus — Imperius Rex et Populusque Americanus

While all of America is distracted and focused on the death of Osama bin Laden, our President and his minions have been fast at work laying the groundwork for S. 679: Presidential Appointment Efficiency and Streamlining Act of 2011 to speed through the Senate and then make its way into the House and then to the President to sign. Yes, the other hand is quickly forming into a dictatorial fist that is about to smash our Constitution.

As you will recall, the beginning of the end of liberty in Rome commenced with Augustus Caesar who compromised the authority of the Senate through the force of arms and basically the Senate became a facade. America is poised with this proposed bill, to morph immediately from a Republic into an empire with the privileged eunuchs of the Senate as window dressing and a dictator – the first American Caesar – at the country’s helm.

And leading the progressive charge is Chuck Schumer (D-NY). No big surprise there. Schumer is an elitist Marxist and a first class progressive who hates America almost as much as he loves power. He introduced S. 679 on March 30th, 2011. He was joined by a gaggle of progressives from the left and the right. This is something I have been warning Americans about for a long time. If we are to survive as a nation, we must rid ourselves of ALL progressives or our nation is doomed and freedom will be swept into the dustbin of history. Schumer’s esteemed list of constitutional traitors is as follows:

    Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN)
    Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM)
    Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT)
    Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA)
    Sen. Thomas Carper (D-DE)
    Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME)
    Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL)
    Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE)
    Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ)
    Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT)
    Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN)
    Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)
    Sen. John Reed (D-RI)
    Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV)
    Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI)
From The Heritage Foundation, here is a succinct explanation of the bill:
