Russian Bear Growls

In the last couple of weeks in a little reported incident Russian bombers held an exercise in the Arctic region near Alaska.  Operating from forward bases in Siberia the Russian Bomber flew simulated nuclear strikes against strategic and air dense targets in the Last Frontier state.  The Russian exercise began while both Presidents Putin and Obama were barely tolerating each other’s presence during the G-20 summit in Mexico. Nothing new

Russian strategic forces have been performing strike exercises in the arctic region since the cold war but the timing and scale aircraft of aircraft this year is sending a message. The bear is letting Americans know that it is still a global power. If the Russians really sent their largest nuclear Bomber, the Tu-160 Blackjack to participate this year that would send a powerful message to Obama. American and Canadian fighters have been busy intercepting the bombers as they violated Alaskan airspace looking for holes in air defenses. (2)

The 2012 exercise consisted of approximately 30 aircraft consisting of Tu-160 Blackjacks, Tu-95MS Bear H (Nuclear Bombers), Il-78 Midas (Air refueling tankers), A-50 Mainstay (AWACS) being escort by Su-27 Flankers and MiG-31 Foxhound fighters. The Russians simulated attacks against the U.S. missile defense base at Fort Greely and other military installations in Alaska and Canada. Majority of the exercise mission remained inside Russian airspace with occasional incursion approaching Alaskan and Canadian airspace.  The last time the Russians conducted an exercise on this scale in Siberia was in 2007.

Why

The timing of this exercise sent a message that the Russians seeking total control over vast areas of the oil and mineral rich areas of the artic and let the western nations know that the bear still have teeth.  (1) Russia is letting the world know that it is able to strike missile defense sites that could intercept missiles from Russia, China, North Korea or Iran. This may also be seen as a message to Obama not to get involved in Syria.

The Administration kept the details of the Russian exercise secret until revealed in the press. Looks like Obama cannot be bothered on his fundraising tour to object to Russia incursion into America’s airspace.
