Detroit schools must stop breeding generations of welfare recipients

by George Spelvin,  staff writer

What a disgrace to learn from statistics just released by the Department of Education that “…only 7 percent of the eighth graders in Detroit are grade-level proficient or better in reading.”  And statistics show that “Detroit public-school eighth graders do even worse in math than they do in reading.  Only 4 percent SCORED HIGHLY ENOUGH to be rated proficient or better in math. “State figures reveal [just] over 30 percent of public-school eighth graders were proficient or better in reading or math. “Sixty eight percent of Michigan public-school eighth graders are not proficient in reading and 69% are not proficient in math.” (3)  And little to no progress has been made during the last 12 years. (1)

Worst of all, we learn NOTHING of this from our erstwhile, Mainstream Media!

Americans watched as union thuggery took place at the state capital during the passage of right-to-work legislation.  Countless teachers took vacation and sick days to be present at Democrat Party-sponsored events protesting the right of individuals to freely choose whether or not to join a union. Will the new law result in competent, dedicated teachers coming to Michigan schools? Will it provide the means of removing and replacing “educators” who have no business in a classroom?  Certainly something has to be done to improve statistics which currently foreshadow disaster for Michigan, public school students and by extension, the state itself.  And students seeing their teachers bully right-to-work supporters in front of the state capital can’t be part of the solution.

When Mitch Daniels signed right-to-work legislation in Indiana, he saw companies and new money pour into the state in record numbers.  Could it be that law makers in Lansing are making a purely economic decision that will open doors for a renewal in Detroit and schools all over the state?

One commenter in a Christian News story points to a big reason why Detroit schools are showing such pitiful results.  “Black peer pressure is an albatross around the neck of academically gifted or motivated black students.”  Acting White is a slur black students hurl around their playgrounds.  (2) Another commenter quotes President Obama who famously proclaimed, “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon,” as America’s first black president seemed to praise a young black male killed in a fight with a community security watchdog.  But the commenter points out that, early in 2009, Obama said nothing about Darrion Albert who was murdered for acting white at a Chicago bus stop.

Kids can no longer be satisfied with a life of depending upon the generosity of taxpayers to make up for the penalties of ignorance. But just as labor unions provide a shield to protect workers from the consequences of incompetence, Big Brother and the Democrat Party offer a lifetime of public assistance. If teachers are incapable of getting the job done, they must find another way of making a living. And kids   unwilling to put forth the necessary effort in school must be told to fend for themselves as the government will no longer feed, clothe and house generations of welfare recipients.

RINO Michigan Governor prevented from imposing ObamaCare on state

by Doug Book,  staff writer

In November, Michigan voters roundly defeated ballot Proposal 2, a union-sponsored measure “…which would have amended the state constitution to guarantee collective bargaining rights to public and private-sector employees.” (1) For the first 2 years of his term, Governor Rick Snyder had consistently advised Michigan organized labor to keep such a proposal off the ballot. “My concern is that [the proposal] could start a whole divisive atmosphere of other people trying to put right-to-work on the ballot,” explained Snyder. (1)

Of course those “other people” so feared by the timid governor were fellow Republicans in the Michigan legislature!

In point of fact, Snyder cared no more about unions attaining greater power than the prospect of a future Republican attempt to thwart it. His REAL concern was being placed in the middle should Michigan voters decide against the proposal. For such a vote would provide just the impetus needed for house and senate Republicans to draft the right-to-work bill longed for by Michigan conservatives for decades.  The cowardly Governor Snyder knew he would then be forced to sign the bill into law, making a powerful enemy of organized labor.

In short, this craven, finger-in-the-political-wind Republican hoped to keep friends on both sides by doing absolutely nothing and counseling others to do the same. Unfortunately for Snyder, the republican-controlled legislature is currently crafting that dreaded right-to-work bill and will have it on the governor’s desk before Christmas.

Prior to the November election Snyder stood firmly against the building of an ObamaCare exchange in the State of Michigan. But upon the re-election of Barack Obama, Snyder did a full about face, reportedly conceding, “Hey, it’s the law of the land, we have to make the best of it.” (2)

“The governor is absolutely in favor of Michigan having a state-run health care insurance exchange as part of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act..,” said ObamaCare opponent Jacob Hoogendyk. Indeed, not only did Snyder suddenly change his view of ObamaCare, he announced that he had filed papers with HHS stating Michigan would accept a state-federal partnership exchange should the legislature not permit the building of a state exchange. (2)

Fortunately, the Michigan House Health Policy Committee voted 9-5 against the building of a state-run exchange. Whether the governor will now secure his second choice, that of the state-federal partnership, remains to be seen.

Michigan Governor Richard Snyder has become a textbook example of the “rabbity RINO”: a Republican perpetually unnerved at the thought of displeasing anyone but fellow members of the Republican Party. A leader would make full use of the advantage Republicans enjoy in both the state house and senate. But Snyder is the furthest thing from a leader, being quite at ease with any occurrence which does not involve an actual decision on his part.

Those who wonder why the Republican Party has such a difficult time convincing conservatives to flock to the polls, look to the governor of Michigan for the answer.

Police shut down event promoting Constitution on orders from Islamic, terror support group CAIR

by Doug Book,  staff writer

A Michigan police department has made it clear that freedom of speech and the Constitutional right to peaceably assemble may only be enjoyed upon approval by the terror-promoting, Islamic group CAIR.

On January 26th, Michigan State Representative David Agema and others hosted an event entitled “Constituting Michigan—Founding Principles Act” in the Allegan High School auditorium. The purpose of the event was “…to inform the public about the importance of honoring the United States Constitution, to recognize the internal threat to America posed by radical Muslims and the dangers to our free society caused by the imposition of Sharia law.” (1)

As the Michigan House sponsor of HB 4769, “The Restriction of Application of Foreign Laws Act” it is Representative Agema’s goal to ban the use of foreign or Sharia law by Michigan courts “…when those laws conflict with fundamental rights protected by the Constitution of the United States and the State of Michigan.” (1)

But Michigan executive director of the Council on Islamic-American Relations (CAIR) Dawud Walid strongly opposes Agema’s House bill and upon being advised of the planned program at the high school, wrote a letter to school officials complaining about the event.

It is important to note that CAIR was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation case, the largest terror-funding proceeding in US legal history. An organization with proven ties to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood which regularly uses its limitless financial resources to intimidate and silence critics with frivolous court actions, CAIR is managed nationally by radical Islamic convert Ibrahim Hooper.

It was under Hooper’s direction that CAIR co-sponsored a conference at Brooklyn College during which the crowd was led in a song with lyrics proclaiming “No to the Jews, Descendants of the Apes.” Clearly a first class organization, is CAIR. (2)

Yet when school officials informed Allegan police that Michigan CAIR director Walid was upset, officers immediately descended on the high school to break up Representative Agema’s dangerous attempt to celebrate and support the nation’s founding document.

On April 30th the Thomas More Law Center filed suit on behalf of Agema and event co-sponsors. “This case seeks to protect and vindicate fundamental constitutional rights…under the 1st and 14th Amendments to the Constitution…and Michigan law…” wrote the Law Center in the filing. (3)

But even when a violation of Constitutional rights is as obvious as that perpetrated by Allegan police the Thomas More Law Center might have its hands full. One year ago the Department of Justice DECLINED to prosecute CAIR in the Holy Land Foundation case over cries of outrage from FBI and other DOJ employees who had worked on the indictment and in spite of ample evidence of the organizations guilt. Apparently, protocols from the Imam of Pennsylvania Avenue strongly discourage any exercise which might place Muslim advocates of terrorism in a bad light.

It’s a disgrace that a radical, terror supporting, Islamic organization should have the authority to order the actions of Michigan police against law abiding American citizens. It will be imperative to follow the progress of this action through the federal court.
