In the decade which has followed the taking of 3000 American lives by Muslim terrorists, Washington politicians have done more damage to our Constitution and posed a greater threat to the rights and liberty of the American people than could have been conceived of or accomplished by all the Muslims in all the backward, barbaric, Islamic regimes of the world.
After 9/11 the American people were interested in two things—getting even and making certain it didn’t happen again.
So on September 14th, members of congress issued a “Joint Resolution for the Use of Military Force,” authorizing the President to “…use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations or persons HE DETERMINES planned, authorized, committed or aided the terrorist attacks…” (my caps) (1)
And beginning with George Bush and continuing through the 3 years of Barack Obama, the language of this Resolution has been employed to arm the President of the United States with powers so threatening to the God given and Constitutional rights of the American people as to have already been either strictly limited or clearly denied the Chief Executive by existing legislation–existing legislation which is being ignored.
George Bush and Barack Obama have utilized “Warrantless Surveillance, ” tapping into communications of American citizens suspected of being in league with al Qaeda. In 2001 the Patriot Act was passed, “…dramatically reducing restrictions on law enforcement’s……ability to search telephone, email communications, medical, financial and other records.”
On New Year’s Eve, Barack Obama signed into law legislation enabling him to incarcerate for an indefinite period any American citizen he considers a terrorist threat to the United States. This National Defense Authorization Act gives such prisoners no right to view the evidence or charges against them, no right to counsel and none to a speedy trial before their peers. Though guaranteed all citizens by the 6th Amendment, these rights are vacated by this Act.
Legislation is now making its way through congress which would provide the president authority to revoke the citizenship of any American he believes either to have engaged in “hostilities” against the US, or to be a supporter of those who have.
In short, our rights and liberty are being eagerly swallowed whole by DC politicians in the name of protecting the nation from terrorism. And make no mistake, both Democrats and Republicans are signing on to these overreaching abuses of federal authority with little regard for the Constitutional treachery being exercised.
Many are undoubtedly greedy for the power such dangerous legislation affords the Washington, ruling elite. Others give these measures their approval in order to avoid accusations of being “soft on terrorism.”
Either way, how do we the people stop and reverse the disintegration of our rights and the bastardization of the Constitution? “In questions of power, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution,” wrote Thomas Jefferson of those who would be foolish enough to consider “their” president to be above the improper use of unlimited power. (3)
But when elected officials refuse to BE bound by the Constitution, what recourse is left the American public?
The Founders would undoubtedly be both shocked and dismayed that the American people have yet to make good use of the 2nd Amendment rights these great men were so careful to reaffirm in our Constitution.

Ron Paul is the only candidate who is outraged at our losses of freedom and abuse of the constitution. This is an odd piece for you to run considering that I know how harshly you view Ron Paul. Maybe folks are starting to see the light?

Doug, I used to think ObamaCare was the absolute worst thing to ooze its' way down to us peons from the Puppet in the WH and Congress; but with the signing of The National Defense Authorization Act, the political climate just took another, more dangerous and radical detour around our Constitutional protections against "unreasonable search and seizure" protections.
Contempt of Congress, and a seething hatred for the man who has single-handedly decimated my respect for the Oval Office is all that I am left with…..No "hope" but plenty of "Change" , that was hidden from us and lied about by then "candidate" Obama.
Fine article, Doug…you just keep turnin' out one well written topic after another….do you manage to get much sleep at night? I know that if MY head was crammed with so many ideas, as yours must be, I'd be "pinging " off the darkened walls of the bedroom !

What's really disheartening is the fact that Republicans vote in droves for this stuff as well. Coming from Democrats, it's just typical. I thought Rand Paul a flake like his dad, but give him credit, he was one of only 3 in the senate to vote AGAINST the NDAA!
Doug, I read an article somewhere (and not too long ago), which opined that The Left has become more radical and blatantly marxist….but so too have the Republicans moved to the left of center…..What is SO damn bad about living in this Country that would spur Congress, on BOTH sides of the bloody aisle for God's sake, to insist that America must be beaten down and denigrated to a third world status ??
Is Congress REALLY so fearful that the American people will engage in mass hangings of their National legislators that they must insulate their precious, pompous selves from our wrath at ANY cost??

I work with the Catch-A-Dream Foundation, which provides hunting and fishing trips to children with life-threatening illnesses. This past weekend we had our annual banquet/fundraiser event in Starkville. As a part of our program, we had scheduled Sgt 1st Class Greg Stube to come; he's a highly decorated U.S. Army Green Beret and inspirational speaker who was severely injured while deployed overseas and didn't have much of a chance for survival. Greg is stationed at Ft. Bragg , NC and received permission from his commanding officer to come speak at our function. Everything was on go until Obama made a policy that NO U.S. SERVICEMAN CAN SPEAK AT ANY FAITH-BASED PUBLIC EVENTS ANYMORE. Needless to say, Greg had to cancel his speaking event with us. Didn't know if anyone else was aware of this new policy. You're just starting to see the Obamanation. This is just how the Nazis did it in the 1930s — slowly, one step at a time. This should be forwarded to everyone regardless of party affiliation! We have lost 50% of our freedom of speech in the last 2 years. The news media is not allowed to print anything negative about this evil Obama.

You appear to be a little too "quick on the draw" while shooting from the hip. Before you take aim, it's wise to engage the brain.
Additionally, no one here said "Ron Paul is BAD". Those were your word, not ours…Paul may not be our first choice as a Republican Presidential candidate at this early hour of the running….but if somehow Paul manages to pull off the nomination, I cannot imagine folks at this website NOT voting for Paul, if only to prevent the loathsome Obama from returning to the Oval Office.
Not REAL high praise for Paul exactly….as he would be the lesser of the two evils.
This sort of media-driven and Democratic control over our candidate selection is what we are trying to prevent once again…..Americans are all too familiar with being forced to vote for the lesser of two evils and we're sick of it.
