Two positions on Israel “Iran cannot be allowed to have a nuclear weapon” or do nothing and hope

By Jim Emerson, staff writer

Upon seeing that international talks with Iran over its nuclear program had failed, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, insisted that “Iran cannot be allowed to have a nuclear weapon.”  Israel’s deputy foreign minister, Danny Ayalon, asked the negotiations with the Islamic state to be declared a failure and Iran to be presented with an ultimatum to halt its nuclear program in a few weeks.

Intelligence reports obtained by Israel from the United States and other countries have shown that Iran is further along in the development of a nuclear weapon than was reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency. The weapon would most likely be fitted by the Shahab-3 missile.  The Shahab-3 is Iran’s copy of North Korea’s Nodong-1 medium range missile that can easily reach any point in Israel.

 30 day war

Out going Home Front Defense Minister Matan Vilnai, told the Maariv newspaper that any Iranian operation would lead to a month long missile attack on the Jewish nation.  Officials assess that Iran will launch its missiles against the civilian population in retaliation. Israel is aware that it may need to conduct a unilateral strike against Iran without support from the Obama White House and is aware there will be retaliation.  Unlike the United States Israel, the Israelis recognizes she is an easy targets for the Iranian regime.

The Israelis believe that Iran is building nuclear weapons and will use them against the Jewish state without any hesitation. Israel’s anti-missile defense system, the Iron Dome, may be an effective deterrence but it can only minimize the damage of missile attacks. The Iranians need only one nuclear tipped missile to get through Israel’s “shield” to severely compromise Israel’s ability to defend itself from future attacks.

Israel cannot afford to ignore threats to is existence. With the Muslim Brotherhood taking over Egypt, and the movement of the Brotherhood al Qaeda in Syria and a nuclear capable Islamic republic, the likelihood of multiple nuclear attacks is not a farfetched conspiracy driven scenario. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei feeling embolden by the United States warning Israel against striking Iran, has stepped up his call for the elimination of the Zionist regime from the map.

During a news conference this week,  Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta passed on his belief that Israel had not decided to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities.  Gen Dempsey, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff, has said that if the Israelis did strike Iran, the operation would not destroy the program but only set it back. The General in a way reveled the Valerie Jarrett influenced Obama Administration’s policy: do nothing.
