Who Is to Blame?

By Debbie Leininger, Staff Writer

What began as a highly anticipated premier for movie-goers in a Colorado community suddenly turned to tragedy when an unstable man entered the theater and began shooting. Lives were lost, scores were injured, and the nation will relive this episode over and over on news outlets for years to come.

As accusations are made and calls for gun control fill the airwaves, the question arises: “How did immorality, violence, and death corrupt a once Christian-influenced American culture? The answer to that question lies within the Christian community.

In 2011, a twenty-year “State of the Church” study by the Barna Research Group showed a drop in church attendance by 7% to 59%. Weekly Bible reading dropped from 9% to 62%. 29% of Christians volunteered at church compared to 41% in 1991. Founder George Barna warned that American Christians have become complacent.

In a country founded on Judeo-Christian beliefs, and whose official motto is “In God We Trust,” ungrounded believers are being assimilated into secularism. They have left their first love, Jesus Christ, for the allure of this world.

Paul warned of the ramifications of disobeying God’s precepts: Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship Him as God or even give Him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. The result was that their minds became dark and confused. (Romans 1:21 NKJV)

Violence, perversion, obscenity, vulgarity, and lewdness via television, movies, music, fashion, education, and the internet have desensitized the church. Instead of standing its ground, the church has “adapted” to the secular status quo. Entire denominations have forsaken truth to lean on their own understanding.

America has lost its fear of the Lord and is set up for judgment. This nation will stand if the church stands its ground and teaches Americans how to guard their hearts, eyes and ears.

Jesus said, “What comes out of a man,  that defiles a man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man.” (Mark 7:20 -23 NKJV)

In a Gallup poll taken in January, 2012, more than three-quarters of Americans identified themselves as Christian. The fact that almost 80% of a population does not dominate the culture reveals the church is no longer salt and light, but has lost its savor. It is good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. (Matthew 5:13 NKJV)

God promises in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

God’s people must choose to once again be purveyors of truth in America. If not, they will face the consequences of their actions.

    Coach,
It is obvious that you like the phrase, “What have you done today to deserve to live in America?” and equally obvious that I do not. Jesus does not ask us what have we done to deserve to live in Heaven. For America, it is a birthright or an adoption by America. For Heaven, it is by adoption only…and it is a Gift from God. If we got what we deserved, we’d be in Hell. You quoted a favorite verse of mine, 2Chronicles 7:14. Man will not abide by this…too bad! What you are seeing in this time is a Prophecy coming to pass: “the falling away” of the Church. You will see this all around you. Times will not get better because man is on the path of self-destruction. He will not return to God and be blessed, he is self-centered instead of God-centered. God is bringing the world’s sins and calamities to a head and He is about to say, “OK, everybody, out of the pool.” Come quickly, Lord Jesus. I enjoy the articles, thanks.

The intent of “Who Is to Blame” was to address the absense of the church in making a stance against the social sins of our day. The lack of salt and light from the church has contributed to the downfall of America.

Personal attacks against individuals have no place in this forum.

Jim, the “enjoyment” is found in the articles giving the message like it is…good and bad. You’ve made several accusations against Coach’s character and religious beliefs, However, I see no listing of any violations to the same. Often when truth is spoken, it is perceived as hate because we do not agree with it. I think it would be good if you could provide examples for the accusations you have made. If none can be given, then perhaps your name, “Beam,” is in line with the verses: (Mat 7:3) And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

I would hope that you aren’t judging Coach’s salvation since only God can judge that. Prove to me any of the accusations you made are true and I will side with you on the issue. Failure to do so would just make of you what you accuse him of being. BTW, I don’tknow Coach and beliefs but I will take issue with him if he is wrong. I point out the perceived error and back it up.

WDL, I probably don’t agree with everything JB says, but I too hate the demonizing of the “other side”. I think we can be intelligent and debate policies all day long. Even (or in spite of) if the other side does it, we as Christians SHOULD do better, or our faith is shallow. Jesus said you can judge a tree by its fruit and if evil proceeds out of a mans mouth, he is evil. Period, end of story for me. Let us debate with love and humility. Our goal is not to be right, but to state our case and hopefully wins souls for Christ with our actions and speech.
